THE 20TH ANNUAL MARKETING CONFERENCE COMES AT A TIME WHEN AS A COUNTRY WE ARE GRAPPLING WITH FINDING WAYS AND MEANS OF REVAMPING OUR ECONOMY. THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT HAS REMAINED EXTREMELY CHALLENGING TO ALL AND SUNDRY AND HENCE OUR PREOCCUPATION TO FOCUS ON ADDRESSING THIS PHENOMENON. IT IS TRUE TO SAY THAT EVERYONE IS AFFECTED BY THE UNFOLDING EVENTS AND AS AN INSTITUTE WE FEEL THIS IS THE TIME FOR US TO SHARE OUR IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES TO ENHANCE OUR CAPABILITIES TO RESPOND TO THESE ECONOMIC SHOCKS. YOU WILL REALISE THAT IN SUCH TIMES IT IS US THE MARKETERS WHO SUFFER THE MOST BECAUSE WE ARE CALLED UPON TO TURN THINGS AROUND IN OUR RESPECTIVE ORGANISATIONS. THIS IN ITSELF IS THE REALISATION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR PROFESSION. WE ARE AT THE CENTRE OF EVERY BUSINESS ACTIVITY AND I FEEL THAT WHEN WE CLAIM TO BE THE FULCRUM OF EVERY BUSINESS, WE NEED TO BE APPLAUDED AND APPRECIATED AS SUCH. HOWEVER THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE MUST REMAIN COMPLACENT AND DORMANT TO A LEVEL WHERE WE BEGIN FAILING TO MOVE WITH CHANGE. THE DYNAMISM OF OUR PROFESSION REQUIRES THAT WE ARE CURRENT AND FOCUSSED AND ALIVE TO ANY CHANGE IN THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, NO MATTER HOW MINUTE IT MAY BE. THIS IS WHAT DISTINGUISHES OUR PROFESSION FROM OTHERS.

I HAD TO BEGIN MY ADDRESS IN THIS ABSTRACT MANNER JUST TO HIGHLIGHT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR MARKETERS TO MOVE AWAY FROM ROUTINE AND STRUCTURED WAYS OF DOING THINGS. SUCH APPROACHES ARE NO LONGER SUSTAINABLE IN THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE HAVE FOUND OURSELVES TODAY. TEXT BOOK THEORIES ARE NOW BEING CHALLENGED BY EVENTS ON THE GROUND AND THIS CALLS FOR A SPECIAL REFLECTION ON OUR PART AS MARKETERS. WE HAVE REACHED A SPACE WHERE WE CAN NO LONGER USE STRUCTURE ALONE TO ACHIEVE OUR TARGETS. STRUCTURE MAY BE IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF MONITORING THE APPLICATION OF RESOURCES AND PURPOSES OF FEEDBACK, HOWEVER WHERE YOU HAVE CONSTANT CHANGE KNOCKING EVERY DAY, YOU NEED TO REALIGN YOUR STRATEGIES. WE NEED TO BEGIN TAKING RADICAL STEPS TO SURVIVE IN THIS TURBULENT BUSINESS DISPENSATION. EVEN WHEN TOUGH TIMES ARE APPARENT, OUR MANAGEMENTS NEVER CEASE TO ASK FOR MORE FROM MARKETERS. MEANWHILE OUR BUDGETS WILL HAVE BEEN DOWNSIZED IN THE INTEREST OF CUTTING COSTS, THEREBY LIMITING MARKETING ACTIVITIES DRASTICALLY. THIS IS THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE FIND OURSELVES AS MARKETERS AND WE HAVE TO SURVIVE ANYWAY. WE ALL KNOW THAT AS MARKETERS, WE ARE NOT MAGICIANS WHO FIND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS BY LOOKING THROUGH A CRYSTAL BALL. BUT THAT IS WHAT EVERYBODY EXPECTS. MARKETING HAS NEVER BEEN AN INDIVIDUAL TASK; IT IS FOR THE ENTIRE ORGANISATION TO EMBRACE BECAUSE IT IS ALL ABOUT WEALTH CREATION. THE SUPPORT RENDERED BY MANAGEMENT, THROUGH REALISTIC BUDGET ALLOCATIONS IS WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. BUT THE ONUS IS ON US AS MARKETERS TO ALWAYS PROVE OURSELVES IN THE WAY WE CONDUCT OURSELVES. THIS IS THE TIME FOR US TO RISE AND FACE THE CHALLENGES AS THEY COME.

IT IS AGAINST THIS BACKGROUND THAT AS AN INSTITUTE WE HAVE BEEN CAMPAIGNING FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF THE ZIM ACT TO ENSURE THE REGULATION OF MARKETING SO THAT ONLY QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS ARE EMPLOYED IN MARKETING AND SALES POSITIONS. TODAY WE HAVE MASQUERADERS HOLDING MARKETING POSITIONS THEREBY DENTING THE IMAGE OF OUR PROFESSION WHEN THE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE ON MARKETING FALLS SHORT OF THE EXPECTATIONS OF MANAGEMENT AND THE BOARD DURING TIMES OF ECONOMIC DOWNTURNS AND TURBULENT TIMES. THE LIMITED MARKETING KNOWLEDGE THESE PEOPLE HAVE FAILS TO PROVIDE TURNAROUND STRATEGIES FOR ORGANISATIONAL SURVIVAL. THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE THEY POSSES IN SALES AND ADVERTISING IS INSUFFICIENT TO MOVE THE ORGANISATION THROUGH ROUGH PATCHES. MARKETING IS FAR MUCH MORE THAN JUST SELLING AND ADVERTISING BECAUSE IT IS STRATEGIC IN NATURE. ONLY QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE PROPERLY SCHOOLED AND FULLY BAKED CAN PROVIDE A SHIELD FROM THE NUMEROUS CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH ECONOMIC TURBULENCES.

THIS YEAR OUR CONFERENCE THEME IS “DISRUPTIVE THINKING IN A CHANGING TECHNOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT”. WE FEEL THE THEME IS APPROPRIATE CONSIDERING HOW RAPID OUR BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IS CHANGING. THE THEME IS AIMED AT REMINDING MARKETERS ABOUT THE DYNAMISM OF THEIR PROFESSION AND EQUIPPING THEM WITH THE NECESSARY TOOLS SO THAT THEY ARE EQUAL TO THE TASK IN DEALING WITH THESE CHANGES. THERE CAN BE NO BETTER PLATFORM OTHER THAN THIS ONE WHERE MARKETERS CAN BE APPROPRIATELY APPRAISED. I THEREFORE URGE YOU DEAR COLLEAGUES TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY WITH BOTH HANDS. INTERACTIVE FORUMS ARE VERY CRITICAL ESPECIALLY NOW THAT COLLABORATIONS HAVE TAKEN CENTRE STAGE. BEING EQUIPPED AS A MARKETER IS AS GOOD AS EQUIPPING THE RESPECTIVE ORGANISATION WHERE YOU ARE SERVING. I WISH TO REITERATE THAT THE INSTITUTE HOSTS THIS EVENT AS A WAY OF PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR ALL PRACTICING MARKETERS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT AND SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, AND ALSO TO REVIEW THE BUSINESS FOR THE YEAR. MARKETING IS A VERY DYNAMIC PROFESSION THAT REQUIRES CONSTANT APPRAISAL IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT OUR PROFESSIONALS ARE EXPOSED TO THE NEW AND BEST MARKETING PRACTICES WORLD OVER ESPECIALLY NOW THAT DISRUPTIONS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY. IN THIS REGARD, THIS EVENT IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT HELPS BRING TOGETHER MARKETERS AND GENERAL BUSINESS PRACTITIONERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE TOGETHER TO SHARE EXPERIENCES AND NEW IDEAS TO ENHANCE OUR STANDING AS INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONALS. TO THE INSTITUTE, THIS IS A MOMENTOUS EVENT TO WHICH A LOT OF IMPORTANCE IS ATTACHED CONSIDERING THAT IT IS ALSO A PLATFORM FOR SETTING NEW GOALS FOR THE PROFESSION. WE ARE RESOLVED AS ZIM TO ENSURE THAT OUR RELEVANCE IS RECOGNISED AND FELT BY ALL OUR STAKEHOLDERS, ESPECIALLY THE GOVERNMENT THAT WE ARE READY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR COUNTRY.

THE PLATFORMS THAT WE ORGANISE ARE MEANT TO EXPOSE MARKETERS AND THOSE IN RELATED DISCIPLINES TO BEST AND MODERN PRACTICES IN THE WORLD. OURS IS TO ENSURE THAT WE BUILD A CADRE OF MARKETERS THAT IS WELL INFORMED AND APPRAISED SO THAT IN TURN THEY CAN ADD VALUE TO DIFFERENT CORPORATES THEY WORK FOR.

THIS COMBINATION OF SPEAKERS WE BELIEVE WILL ENABLE US SHARE EACH OTHER’S EXPERIENCES AS EVERY REGION HAS ITS OWN PECULIAR CHALLENGES. IT IS OUR CONSIDERED VIEW THAT AS ZAMBIA WE NEED TO LEARN FROM OUR FRIENDS FROM ELSEWHERE SO THAT WE CAN IMPROVE ON WHAT WE ARE ALREADY DOING AT HOME. I WISH TO THANK ALL THE SPEAKERS FOR ACCEPTING THE INVITATION TO COME AND SHARE KNOWLEDGE WITH US. TO THEM I SAY A BIG WELCOME AND CAN ONLY HOPE THAT THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF LONG-LASTING RELATIONSHIPS.
